Jacqui Saldana

Jacqui Saldana is a Pasadena, California mother and blogger. When her first child was born, Jacqui started a business called Baby Boy Bakery where she shared her favorite recipes and blogged about life as a wife and mother, gaining a loyal audience who particularly fell in love with her son's curly red hair and spunky attitude. She would routinely use Ryan as the model for her social media, often showing him off in his stylish clothing and eating her homemade treats.

Tragically, Mrs. Saldana and her husband suffered the unexpected loss of their son Ryan in May of 2014. The then 3-year-old  was struck by a truck while playing outside with his cousin, sparking a social media outpour of love directed at the blogger mommy and her family. Once Jacqui and her husband had time to understand and come to terms with the loss of their precious boy, she began to blog and share her journey with grief over losing a child, unknowingly and indirectly helping hundreds of families who were going through a similar situation.

Jacqui's blog gained so much support and notoriety that her story eventually reached Ellen DeGeneres, who brought the distraught mother on her show and voiced her unconditional support towards the family. Today, Jacqui and her husband have been blessed with a baby girl, and the mother of two carries on her business in honor of her son and continues to help others cope with sudden loss.

Safe B.A.E.

Jada Smith, Daisy Coleman and Ella Fairou are three sexual assault survivors who created an organization called Safe B.A.E. The three girls (along with co-founders Shael Norris and Charlie Coleman) have bravely spoken out about their sexual assaults, the sharing of the assaults over social media, the community backlash they received, their schools’ handling of their ongoing harassment and how they have fought for change in an effort to prevent what happened to them from happening to anyone else.

Daisy Coleman and her brother even spoke out against sexual assault in a riveting Netflix documentary called Audrie & Daisy (directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk), which is an urgent real-life drama that examines the ripple effects on families, friends, schools and communities when two underage young women find that sexual assault crimes against them have been caught on camera. Daisy and her brother explain how they managed to turn the tragedy into a positive by speaking out against sex crimes and giving voices to those who can't- such as Audrie Pott, the young girl who took her life after pictures of her assault began circulating online. Along with The Hunting Ground (2015), the documentary is changing the way people view sexual assault against women and helping victims to speak out.

Safe B.A.E is currently working on a campaign called #quitthisshit, which urges those who witness sexual assault crimes to report them instead of re-victimizing the victim by harassing, spreading rumors or sharing images or information of the assault online.

Debbie Sardone

Debbie Sardone is a leading expert in the cleaning industry. She started her business out of the trunk of her car and grew into one of the largest maid services in the country. In 2006, Debbie began her national nonprofit called Cleaning For A Reason, which has helped thousands of women receive free housecleaning while battling cancer.

The website's about me page reads, "Cleaning For A Reason is a nonprofit organization that serves all the United States and Canada. Our mission is to give the gift of free house cleaning to women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer. Our goal is to let these brave and strong women focus on their health and treatment while we focus on, and take away the worry and work of, cleaning their homes– free of charge. We have recruited over 1,200 maid services to donate free housecleaning to women who are undergoing treatment for cancer. Since 2006, our partner maid services have volunteered their time to clean for over 25,000 women – valued at over $6,500,000.

Debbie Sardone, President and Founder, had the idea to start Cleaning For A Reason years ago when, as the owner of Buckets & Bows Maid Service, she had a call with a prospective client who told Debbie, “I won’t be able to afford that now; I’m undergoing cancer treatment” and hung up. Since Debbie had not gotten the woman’s phone number she was unable to call back to make arrangements and in that instant decided no woman undergoing cancer treatment would ever be turned away by her business. In fact, they would even be offered a free housecleaning service!

Then in 2005, Debbie shared her story with other maid services at a national cleaning industry convention. She shared that it was these women, undergoing the physical, emotional, and financial rigors of cancer treatment, who needed professional housecleaning services the most. Immediately after sharing her story, a rush of cleaning business owners expressed their interest and support. Debbie registered Cleaning For A Reason as a nonprofit organization and at the next convention maid services signed up to donate their services on the spot."

Sarah Fane

Sarah Fane is the founder and CEO at Afghan Connection, and she talks to capacity about the charity’s early beginnings and how it is now transforming the lives of thousands of children across Afghanistan. Afghan Connection is a UK-registered charity working in Afghanistan which aims to improve access to education for Afghan children. The charity also trains Afghan teachers to ensure the sustainability of the schools and improve the nation's long-term educational prospects.

Ms. Fane developed the idea for Afghan Connection after a trip to the war-torn country in 2002, when she served as a doctor in hundreds of refugee camps sprawled across the country- but she always carried a passion for the region. Back in her student days she spent her elective from medicine at Bristol University in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. During this time, Fane worked at the Red Cross Hospital in Peshawar, where she provided aid to the war-wounded from Afghanistan- some of whom had travelled 10 days to get there due to the lack of hospitals. Sarah and one of her sons even started a cricket project for the children in Afghanistan after the young boy mentioned that the charity shouldn't just be focusing on education, but all aspects of life (sports, arts etc).

Even with four children, Sarah continues to work back and forth from Afghanistan and the U.K, pouring her heart and soul into bettering the lives of the Afghan people every single day.

Tina Meier

Tina Meier is the mother of Megan Meier, a teenager who died of suicide by hanging three weeks before her 14th birthday. Megan took her own life after falling victim to relentless and cruel online bullying from a former friend, the friend's mother and a woman who would babysit for the accused family- who later characterized the whole ordeal as a "joke".

Tina Meier and her husband were so stressed out and heartbroken from the whole ordeal that they actually divorced shortly after their daughter's passing. Tina then decided to dedicate her life to protecting other young boys and girls from suffering the same fate as her daughter by starting the Megan Meier Foundation, who's mission statement reads  "To live in a world where bullying and cyberbullying no longer exist. We believe that through empowering our society  to celebrate individuality and the acceptance of others, that we can work together to make a difference and create a safer and kinder world."

Tina has shared her daughter's story though TedTalks, CNN, ABC News and many more. She speaks out against bullying and the laws behind the sensitive issue, warning youth what can happen when you target your peers the way Megan was       targeted. She continues to fight for justice, speak with victims and create a safe space for children and bullied youth.

Marissa Presley

Marissa Presley is a domestic violence specialist who works with teens at an organization called Laura's House, a shelter for women who are victims of domestic abuse. She has appeared on large television broadcasts such as Dr. Phil and speaks out at charity events and benefits against domestic violence. She appears in YouTube videos and podcasts to share her knowledge on domestic violence statistics, warning signs and help resources. Dr. Phil's wife Robin even took a tour of Laura's House Women's Shelter, which was later aired on an episode of her husband's popular daytime show.

Laura, who's name inspired the shelter, was a young woman who was murdered by her partner after attempting to leave him on multiple occasions. Laura's mother reached out to a few friends, one of which being Ms. Presley, and together they created Laura's House. The shelter also created an organization called H.E.A.R.T, which is an interactive workshop to prevent adolescent dating abuse.

Laura's House operates on the philosophy that domestic violence is multi-dimensional and often cyclical in nature and must be addressed through a range of interventions. Their goal is to provide supportive service programs that will prepare clients and their children to live independent and violence free lives. Influenced by the growing social needs of the community in which it works, Laura's House has responded by developing innovative residential and outreach programs to meet the unique needs of population groups such as Hispanic families, at-risk teens and preschool children, each coping with the effects of domestic violence. Their success as an agency relies on our commitment to constantly appraise their services, review their results and search for opportunities to improve and expand.

Reshma Saujani

Reshma Saujani began her career as an attorney and activist. In 2010, she surged onto the political scene as the first Indian American woman to run for U.S. Congress. During the race, Reshma visited local schools and saw the gender gap in computing classes firsthand, which led her to start Girls Who Code- an organization who is aiming to end the gender gap in technology. Reshma has also served as Deputy Public Advocate for New York City and ran a spirited campaign for Public Advocate in 2013.

Girls Who Code has gone from 20 girls in New York to 40,000 girls in 50 states. A blurb on the Girls Who Code website states "When girls learn to code, they become change agents in their communities. Whether it’s a game to illustrate the experience of an undocumented immigrant or a website to provide free college prep, our girls create technology that makes the world a better place. Like us, you believed in girls’ unlimited potential. Thanks to your support and contributions, together we’ve inspired thousands of girls to see a future in tech."

Reshma continues to speak out on the benefits of taking risks and empower young women to chase their dreams.
